BLACK IS KING; MY TOP 5 EYEWEAR LOOKS

In the spirit of honesty and transparency I want to start this article by admitting that I wasn’t particularly excited for the release of Black Is King. Although I have always appreciated and respected Beyoncé and her artistry, I had no real desire to watch this highly anticipated film. I knew I could expect a well put together project because, you know, Beyoncé. Having now watched it, I can confidently say that Black Is King is the most visually appealing thing I have seen since Lemonade. Not only was it well shot, directed, written and choreographed, but the styling was remarkable. Especially the eyewear. In this article, I show you my favourite eyewear looks from the film.

1) The diamanté frame

This frame is not for the faint hearted. In all honesty, I cannot think of many occasions where this frame would be appropriate but here, it just works. The jewels have been placed on both the frame and the lenses. The optometrist in me questions how functional this could be but the stylist in me replies, ‘but... FASHUN’.

2) The white, cat-eye frame

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a cat-eye. This white pair is both simple and chic. Pairing it with a white rob and towel gives it a relaxed feel while the dangly, pearl earring reminds us there is nothing basic about the look. White is a great neutral that can be paired with anything. You can never go wrong with it.

3)The amber, bejewelled frame

The styling really brings this pair to life for me. The high ponytail makes us focus on the frame while the clear, amber acetate ensures it doesn’t overpower the face. The jewels around the front of the frame add character to an otherwise subtle frame and all of this complements her red floral outfit without seeming too matchy-matchy.

4) The pearlescent, oval frame

I love everything about this frame. The shape is reminiscent of the famous Christian Roth frame worn by Kurt Cobain. This one, however, has a pearlescent appearance. It almost glistens while complementing the patterned robe perfectly. Oval frames make amazing sunglasses, they allow for an oversized look without appearing overwhelming. I believe this is due to the shape.

5) The thin, rimless, extreme cat-eye frame

Lastly, and by no means least, Beyonce dons a beautiful gele in this scene with an outfit to match. These frames are equal parts simple and edgy, adding to the outfit without taking it over the top. A cat-eye frame always brings elegance to a look and the rimless nature of the frame keeps things subtle. Shop cat-eye frames here.
